Whew! April in the garden was a virtual whirlwind. We hosted a work day, we worked with all of the regularly scheduled classes, and we held an Earth Day event so big it had to have a whole week. All in all, it was a hugely productive month and I sincerely hope that everyone enjoyed themselves and maybe even learned just a little bit.
I want to take this space to give thanks to all of the folks who made EARTH WEEK possible this year. This is by no means a comprehensive list and if I have forgotten to mention you by name, please know that I still have plenty of thanks for you.
First of all, none of this could have been possible without the support of the PTA. Thanks for having a value system that includes the garden and for putting your money where your mouth is.
Next, many thanks to my EARTH WEEK Team. These folks donated a lot of time and energy to seeing this event get off the ground. Matt Reed spent more weekends at the garden building things then he would probably care to remember, Helen Couture organized hikes, attended classes, put together the footprint quiz, and pitched in with the eco-murals, and Laura Schooley was there in spirit with us for every step along the way.
And then there were all of the kids who were just complete and utter ROCKSTARS. Eva, Laura, Elisabeth, Alonso, and Gabe, who were our venerable compost instructors, did an incredible job and sacrificed untold lunch recesses in the name of preparation and rehearsal. A special group of boys- Kevin, Kyle, and Bob helped finish up a lot of small detail projects during their lunch time. Last but not least, Ms. Schooley's class were the tour guides for every single class that came through the garden during EARTH WEEK. They were incredible models of decorum and they facilitated some powerful conversations around conservation. Also, thanks to all of the students who came through with their classes- they discussed, planted, watered, and learned.
In the same vein of kids being empowered to make change, I want to send out a special thanks to Ms. Dorn and her students for really seizing the EARTH WEEK challenge and starting a special in-school recycling program. Way to take the initiative.
In addition to the kids, there were a number of adults who really helped out with the garden in April. Natali Corti made beautiful signs for our garden beds and Amy Hanson donated a worm bin. Bill Mitchell fixed the benches and moved countless wheelbarrows of soil. Georgina Edwards helped gather more volunteers for the class visits. And then there were the volunteers themselves. Thank you, thank you, thank you to Steve, Bill, Titania, Apple, Terri, Helen, Beth, Ameena, Marcia, Caroline, Sapana, and those couple of you whose names were lost in the fervor of the week. The classes who had volunteers had much smoother visits- thank you for making this a priority.
How is that for a long list of gratitude? Through all of our collective hard work we have helped the garden emerge from her winter cocoon. And what a surprise- she is a beautiful and engaging wonder of nature.
